Creating the Future with land-based aquaculture in the Setouchi and Kasaoka Islands
Our Initiatives
Land-based aquaculture on the beautiful natural island of Kitagi
We conduct land-based aquaculture on Kitagijima Island in Kasaoka, which has a beautiful sea. To set up an onshore aquaculture facility, it is necessary to secure a water source and drainage. Aquaculture facilities are set up near a former quarry. Benefiting from the mild Setouchi climate, Kitakijima is an ideal location for securing the clean water necessary for aquaculture. Adopting land-based aquaculture makes it less susceptible to the effects of the natural environment, such as red tides and typhoons, facilitates traceability compliance, and enables improved and more stable quality production.
A stable supply of premium Japanese Tiger Prawns
Nature, knowledge, technology, and feelings. Kitaki no Ebi was born by bringing together Kitaki Island as a hub. Fishermen who have been active on Kitaki Island for many years participate in this project. We aim to realize a fair price and stable supply of prawns, which are susceptible to market prices.

Latest feed trials and research
Global aquaculture production has surpassed natural catches of fish and shellfish and is expanding further. However, one of the challenges in the aquaculture industry is feed. The more efforts are made to increase production of domestically produced fish and meat, the more dependent on imported feed the industry becomes. This is an important issue to overcome in order to improve food self-sufficiency and build a sustainable production system. In this context, research utilizing the functionality of insects for food and feed is expected to be a new solution to reduce dependence on imported fishmeal, thereby contributing to the enhancement of domestic production and reduction of environmental impact.

Kitagi's Fisheries: Harvesting a Sustainable Future
Kitagi Japanese Tiger Prawns
Nestled in the Seto Inland Sea, the nature-rich Kitagi Island is part of Kasaoka City in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Local fishermen with years of experience are now also working on the Kitagi Japanese Tiger Prawns project.

High-tech Facilities
Tiger prawns are sensitive to their habitat, and water quality control in terms of bottom sand, dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH is key. In this business, we have introduced the industry's first filtration system that integrates a sedimentation tank, physical filtration, and biological filtration to ensure a stable supply throughout the year.

Japanese food, looking to the future of Kasaoka
Kasaoka City was announced as a "vanishing city" in 2013. The formerly thriving fishing industry is in decline, and the population is rapidly leaving the city.
We wondered what we could do for Kasaoka and came up with the idea of land-based aquaculture on Kitagi Island (Kitakijima). Kitakijima used to be known as one of the three major stone production areas in the Seto Inland Sea, and was even famous overseas as a major granite production area. We want Kitakijima to regain its former glory. And through our business, we want to contribute to the problems facing Japan's food industry.
We are pleased to announce the launch of this project by a group of friends who agree with this desire. We will pursue the sustainability of Japanese food with gratitude for the nature of Kitagijima.
